A Whisky Tour On Isle of Islay
Following the success of the first Scottish tea and whisky cultural exchange study tour organized by Guanghzou Chunshe Tea Academy in September 2024, the Academy launched a second specialized whisky study tour in June 2025. This journey provided an in-depth understanding of whisky production and tasting techniques, encapsulating the essence of the close relationship between tea and whisky.
This eight-day itinerary focused on the whisky distilleries of Islay, renowned for their peat-smoke flavors. The tour included Bowmore Distillery, one of Scotland’s oldest licensed whisky distilleries, the emerging Kilchoman Distillery, and Jura Distillery, which contrasts with Islay’s signature style. Participants explored the harmonious combination and development of heritage, tradition and modernity through immersive learning.
Beyond whisky, breathtaking landscapes and exquisite cuisine were integral to the experience. The serene island scenery and authentic local culture made the journey unforgettable.
- Introduction to Islay
Islay, the southernmost island of Scotland’s Inner Hebrides, is celebrated for its bold, peaty whisky and pristine natural beauty. The island is home to eight active distilleries, including Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Ardbeg, known for their intense peatiness and marine saltiness, making Islay a sacred destination for whisky enthusiasts.
- Introduction to Jura
Jura, located off Scotland’s west coast, is part of the Hebridean archipelago, known for its stunning landscapes and world-renowned whisky. With only about 200 inhabitants but over 5,000 red deer, Jura’s name originates from Old Norse, meaning “Island of Deer”.
Key highlights:
- Natural Wonders: The Paps of Jura, composed of Dalradian quartzite, are a favorite challenge for hikers.
- Wildlife: Besides red deer, Jura is home to seals, sea eagles, dolphins, and even occasional minke whales.
